Team GB's sailors will take to the stage at the Weymouth Beach Live Site to mark the opening ceremony this Friday evening (27 July).

A total of 12 sailors from the team – including Olympic sailor Ben Ainslie – plus sailing team leader Stephen Park will mark the start of the Games before the opening ceremony is broadcast on large screens at the Live Site.

Park said: "With most of the sailors unable to travel to London for the main opening ceremony due to training and racing schedules, we really wanted to the celebrate the start of the Games with our supporters in Weymouth and Portland, which has been home to our team for a number of years now."

Councillor Margaret Leicester, mayor of Weymouth and Portland, added: "We are absolutely delighted that some members of the British sailing team will be centre stage at the celebrations on the Weymouth Beach Live Site."

The free Live Site at Weymouth Beach will show all of the sailing events and other Olympic sporting competitions during the Games. It will act as a focal point for the region's cultural events, as part of the Maritime Mix - the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad by the Sea."
